Fantastic Pieces of Architectural Design

Around the world and across the centuries, humanity has constructed some of the most impressive sights in the world. Today, people travel far and wide to see these architectural marvels, and many impressive buildings have tourist attractions simply for their design, innovation, or cultural significance.

The Most Recognisable Buildings in the World

Individual pieces of architecture have surpassed just being known by architects and architecture, but identifiable to average people around the globe. These famous buildings have become iconic, and with good reason; a number of these buildings represent the constant innovation and continuous improvement of architectural capabilities.

Take the Empire State Building for example. This building is possibly the most well-known site along the NYC skyline and has stood as a real symbol of the city since its completion in 1931. As New York City became one of the biggest and most visited cities in the world, the Empire State Building quickly gained global recognition. Architecturally, the Empire State Building is also significant as an impressive example of the Art Deco style.

A unique, yet just as recognised building is the Sydney Opera House. The Sydney Opera House had to be both functional and architecturally impressive. Its current purpose, as a concert and performance venue, was the reason for its construction and the construction had to reflect this. A lot of architects are pretty jealous that the most iconic piece of architecture in Australia, the opera house, belongs to Sydney.

Sydney's Opera House Lit Up

A Danish architect submitted the winning design for the Sydney Opera House and oversaw a significant portion of its development. However, budget issues caused a riff between the architect and Sydney’s city officials, Jorn Utzon was dismissed from the project and left Australia. He would never see the Opera House completed. His design remains iconic for its placement on the Sydney harbour and great design.

Lastly, the striking Burj Khalifa in Dubai is an example of where urban architecture is today. The Burj Khalifa is iconic building of the Dubai skyline and the tallest building in the world. It was conceived as a project to relay power and prestige. In its finished form, the Burj Khalifa accomplishes both of these things.

How These Buildings Are Made

Most the world’s biggest and most iconic buildings are not designed by an original architect, but designed, developed, and implemented by an entire architecture firm. Typically, a municipality, business, or another developer will release a call for bids from architects and construction companies. These efforts will provide parameters and needs for design.

Then, an architecture firm will develop a design within these parameters. A set or architects at the company will be responsible for the development of the initial layout. These are frequently the engineers involved in the dramatic part of the process. This will include sketching exterior and interior spaces and creating some of the initial computerised drawings and renderings. These architects will use different computer programs, from SketchUp, Adobe Photoshop, and other architecture-specific software.

Through this creative process, these architecture firms develop their bids for a project. If a bid is awarded to the company, then a group of architects who focus on production and implementation of the design will step in. These engineers are responsible for the development of blueprints and other drawings. This is detail oriented and time intensive work, which can frustrate some architects and enthral others.

Space for the Individual Architect

The size and scale of today’s skyscrapers and bigger buildings require the skills and workforce of an entire architecture firm. This does not mean designers are not working independently on small structures and designs. Often, a single architect is creating the designs for residential homes and different buildings.

Burj Khalifa Building In Dubai

In contrast to a structure such as the Burj Khalifa, one of the more innovative areas of architecture in 2017 is the design of intentionally small spaces, such as micro-homes. These designs are utilising the smallest of spaces in exciting and creative ways that stretch architecture in an entirely new direction.
