The Brisbane Institute for Strengths-based Practice is a not-for profit, voluntary organisation com-prised of a wide variety of professional people with many years experience working in varied en-deavours and human service organisations. The range of experience to be found within the Insti-tute’s members currently includes social work and community development, academic expertise in the social sciences, accountancy, disability support, graphic art, public sector management, In-digenous cultural education, business analysis and project management. This range of expertise is extended through the various networks of each of the Institute’s members.
The institute was incorporated in Brisbane in 2006. It is an organisation of good will and all mem-bers donate their time and skills to the institute and its projects in addition to the paid work in which they are otherwise engaged. The Brisbane Institute of Strengths Based Practice (Inc.) is a partner of the AusAID Australian Youth Ambassadors for Development (AYAD) program, amongst others.
Purpose of the Institute
The Brisbane Institute of Strengths based Practice (Inc.) propagates, supports and encourages strengths based human resource development and management consulting, strengths based counselling, group and community training activities and projects in the Asia pacific region and elsewhere, through studies, visits, conferences and workshops and major training events. Its pur-pose is to promote individual and community development through the practice and promotion of various skills including:
• Asset-based community development
• Appreciative Enquiry
• Strengths-based strategies
• Strengths-focussed therapies
To achieve these aims, the Institute:
• Holds regular conferences on strengths based practice related issues
• Holds training events on strengths based practice related issues
• Promotes reputable strength based trainings
• Consulting for organisations in areas of Appreciative Enquiry, Human Resource Develop-ment, Strategic vision, Quality and motivational Interviewing amongst others
• Provides opportunities for the practice of strength based strategies through relevant pro-grams (e.g. AYAD)
The Brisbane Institute of Strengths Based Practice (Inc.) is proposing a unique conference event that will bring together up to 750 outstanding young leaders and 250 older “mentors” for a series of discussions about what is going right within their communities and what actions they need to take to keep the “right” things go-ing.
It will be an outstanding opportunity for “young” and “old” to listen to each other’s stories, to learn from each other’s experiences and wisdom, to both speak and simply be quiet to appreciate another’s perspective and stories. This “conversation” will take place at the Sarawak Convention Centre from Thursday, November 25 until Sunday, November 28, 2010.
The Chief Facilitator of the Brisbane Institute of Strengths is Dr Venkat Pulla.Dr Venkat Pulla, is a an accredited Practitioner of Social Work well recognised in Australia and overseas as a highly committed trainer of human values and strengths based human services practice frameworks for empowerment of clients and staff within the teams.. This describes Venkat’s style of training and interventions. As one of the pioneers in strength based practice, he offers professional supervision, process facilitation for managing change and wide ranging assistance to the not-for-profit sector and organisational development

Types of projects, Projects in which the Institute may choose to become involved include:, • Conferences about strengths-based strategies and community development, • Minor fund raising for small projects that promote community development or resilience, • Training in strengths-based strategies•, • Making its collective resources available to other organisations that are engaged in projects that are close to the aims and objectives of the Institute., • Initiating conferences and workshops in utilising combinations of Appreciative Enquiry, Human Resource Development, Strategic vision, Quality and motivational Interviewing amongst others, • Develops networks and collaborative relationships with individuals, groups, and organisa-tions that have the potential to support, inspire, challenge and inform strengths based prac-tice.,
