Biodiversity in Design
Sustainable development is defined as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. For us to truly live sustainably, we need to make sure that the stock of natural resources, including the quality of our land, air and water, is maintained or even improved for future generations.
Developing sustainably includes such aspects as encouraging biodiversity, protecting the air, conserving and protecting water quality and quantity, minimising the use of energy from fossil fuels, minimising soil loss, reducing waste and encouraging recycling, selecting appropriate building materials and minimising noise. Sustainable building design considers each of these aspects with the aim of minimising the overall impact of a building on the environment.
