What is the Point of Social Innovation

UK innovation writer, thinker and practitioner Charlie Leadbeater was recently back in Australia.  Among his engagements he contributed to another in the series of Social Innovator Dialogues, co-hosted by CSI, the Australian Social Innovation Exchange (ASIX) and the Australian Centre for Social Innovation (TACSI).  I didn’t get to the Adelaide and Melbourne sessions but I did help to design and host the session in Sydney where Charlie was joined by Matthew Landauer from Open Australian, Chris Quigley from digital democracy outfit Delib.co.uk and Tom Bentley, PM Gillard’s Deputy Ch

Diogo Vasconcelos, Chair of the Social Innovation eXchange

We were very sad to hear of the sudden death last week in London of Diogo Vasconcelos, the Chair of the Social Innovation Exchange and one of the champions of social innovation in the UK, Europe and around the world.

Gamestorming

Here's link to the "gamestorming" diagram which puts the 10 essentials of the gamestorm process into a nice picture.  It's kind of brainstorming ++...and clearly a technique that could be pressed into the service of the social innovation space.

ASIX is starting to take really interesting shape

I'm thrilled with the new ASIX website and the way it's looking.  It's reflective of a new energy and focus in the Exchange I think and a renewed focus on our driving passion...to find better ways to connect changemakers of all varieties, shapes, sizes and locations so they get to be more effective.

Accelerating social changemakers: it’s all about the people

For the past couple of months, we’ve been thinking about who we are, what we do and what we want to achieve. Aided by Rachel Botsman and with great input from a number of people in the social innovation community, we’ve been refining the way ASIX should define its identity and purpose. This blog post sets out the basic story. We’d be keen to hear from anyone with any thoughts and reactions to the way we’ve defined our identity and purpose.

Design and social innovation - 2

We need designers and designers need us. What struck me about the discussions in Melbourne and Sydney, with Ezio Manzini as part of the recent social innovators dialogue road shows, was the slight hesitation by those on both sides of the discussion about design and social innovation about whether and, if so, how they should each be dealing with the other. This is my take.

Design and social innovation - 1

I was able to get to some of the sessions with Ezio Mazini this week in Melbourne and Sydney. This is the first installment of some reflections on his insights and some of the discussions that emerged in the lively sessions with CEOs, business people and the design community. In no particular order of significance or importance...

Defining social innovation - what do you think?

In their report for the EU Commission, the Social Innovation Exchange (SIX) spent some time rehearsing the mix and range of definitions of social innovation. In any new field of endeavour, there is always a deal of debate about definitions and boundaries. Social innovation is no different.
